1/52 Self Portrait Challenge - The First
Time is a great healer but it's not a great beauty treatment. Nature will obviously take it's course and we are all growing older day by day. Time stands still for no one, but capturing emotions can last a lifetime. I have decided to challenge myself technically, emotionally and spiritually over the next year with a professional self portrait each week. The 1/52 self portrait challenge will undoubtedly push me out of my comfort zone and help me understand my dreams, visions and creativity on a deeper level. It will help me reconnect with my inner child that has been locked up due to growing up and silly beliefs in limitations. We have no limitations we only think we do.
"The First" is an up close and deeply personal shoot. Stripped bare, peaceful and calm. I'm in the process of self discovery. Exploring life, letting my mistakes become part of this journey. This shoot was to see if I could actually really push myself way out of my comfort zone and rise to a new challenge.
These images where shot on my bedroom floor using the natural light from the window. I used a tripod, my Sony a7ii with a 55mm lens on manual mode. F1.8 shutter 1/100 ISO 100 and kept my fingers crossed it worked. The fabric is from a very old vintage wedding dress that's been in many model shoots over the last few years. I keep all the the garments I use and archive them as they tell a unique story. Today's story is called "The First" as it's about a girl trying something unknown for the first time.
To shoot this I set up the focal point by using a light stand, set the frame and then I moved into the space before using a remote. They were a little tricky to get for my first challenge but I totally loved creating something really different for the blog this week.
The 52 self portrait challenge will push my creativity to new horizons and I cant wait to shoot next week. I have lots of ideas for unusual shoots going forward so make sure you check in next week. Why don't you give this a go if you are a photographer like me wanting to push yourself out of your comfort zone!
