Interview With Fashion Stylist Courtney Smith
I got to work with an amazing stylist a few months ago and in the process I also got to do a lovely interview with this delightful girl. Here is my interview with fashion stylist Courtney Smith. She's an inspiration and above all one of the nicest people I've ever had the opportunity to photoshoot. She also insisted I snapped a little outfit of the day in her studio, what a sweetie!
Not just any outfit of the day, I got to take my outfit selfie in her iconic studio mirror while I was there and it made me smile so much!
A little visit to her studio made me realise my career path is one that I'm so proud of. Stepping into Courtney's studio was like being at home and it was full of visual creativity. Just like my studio back at home it instantly made me feel like I'm not alone with my passion for style and the need to help other express themselves with clothing and makeup.
Courtney is an Irish born fashionista with a memorable smile, personality and a list of talents as long as your arm. She's a working fashion stylist, shoe designer, creative director, writer, presenter, and all-round style icon.
Courtney's studio is in the heart of Dublin and its an archive of wonderment filled with fashion, accessories and her own creations. I got to pin her down from her hectic work schedule and steal her away from her desk for a morning of essential chats about style and life in Dublin. She's one to follow as she is a rising star in her own right as far as I'm concerned. If you get the chance to meet this Irish beauty I suggest you do it. Especially if like me your obsessed with fashion.
Interview Fashion Stylist With Courtney Smith
Q. What made you become a fashion stylist, did you just decide one day. Or did you just know it was your destiny?
I always adored fashion and dressing up. My mum has pictures of me drawing pretty dresses from a really young age so it felt like a natural progression when I ended up studying fashion design. It was a tutor who suggested I look at fashion styling as a career when she found my mini photoshoots with friends wearing all my designs.
Q. Are your parents supportive of your career?
Incredibly supportive! I don’t think I would be where I am without them and their support. In the early early days I had to borrow money, get lifts to photoshoots and even on occasion use them as ‘assistants’ to return stock for me if I was double booked.
Q. Who are your heroes in the industry and who would you love to meet and style?
My heroes are stylists like Lucinda Chambers, Katie Grand, Kate Young, Edward Enninful and of course Grace Coddington. Anyone whose work inspired a change in the industry and whose work inspired mine.
I’d love to work with up and coming actresses rather than heavily established ones because I feel they are at a stage of discovering their personal style so it’s a little more fun and experimental.
Q What do you love about being in Dublin, and can you share some hidden fashion gems?
Dublin for me is home, it has a great sense of comradery and there is an incredible fashion industry here full of emerging talent. But I also love that I get to travel so much and appreciate home more.
Dublin has some great vintage haunts. My personal favourite is Jean Cronin Vintage in Powerscourt Centre. She curates vintage from all around the world and I never leave empty handed.
Other vintage spots to check are the Dublin Flea Market; Lucy’s Lounge; The Harlequin; Monto and Flip.
Q. Since becoming such a personality yourself and you are a wonderful and inspiring influencer but has it changed your life?
Not really, it’s opened doors for me but I feel regardless of social media I would still be doing what I am doing right now.
Q.Who is the most random friend you have made in the industry.
I have a lot of random friends in the industry; that’s the beauty of this career you get to meet so many interesting people along the way.
Q. Who would you love to be buddies with it could be anyone past or present.
Talk to Jennifer Rock AKA The Skin Nerd, she is my skin guru and recommends the best products. I am currently using Environ products and taking skin supplements too.
Q. Whats the one beauty product or skincare item you cant live without? Your skin always looks so stunning so I know I have ladies that will be keen to hear your secrets?
I ALWAYS take my makeup off at night and make sure to give my skin a rest from makeup too. Lots of water and plenty of sleep too.
Q. What’s your elevator pitch to get a job. If I was a brand and you had to convince me in 1 minute you where perfect for a job how would you go about impressing me!!
I can definitely talk the talk; but I do think you are only as good as your last job so I would show them my work and give them a shoot idea they couldn’t possibly refuse – showing I’m prepared and have done my research too.
Q. If you could do the fashion styling for any film in History, what would it be?
Rocky Horror Picture Show – the original. Or Moulin Rouge – something with a bit of fun and drama.
Q. What outfits in history do you think you could have styled better than the original?
Pretty much all the American Inauguration president’s wives outfits.
Q Lastly what is your advice to yourself if you could travel back in time and pull yourself over for a chat. What advice would you give yourself.
Stop caring so much about what other people think and just do you!
Here is a little behind the scenes from my morning with this wonderful young lady! Courtney I want to say a huge thank you for inviting us to your studio! We will come to visit you again soon and take you up on dinner and drinks!
Twinning!! The love of a good baker boy hat is real!
